Sculptor Conde Ferreira, Escultor Conde Ferreira/ Portugal


Sculptor Conde Ferreira also known has Joaquim Ferreira Fernandes, was born in Portugal, Aveiro in June 1944.

From early times he developed great interest in drawing, painting, and sculpture. His main interest was sculpture using different media, especially pewter and bronze. In 1968 he joined the army and went to fight in what was known as the Portuguese colonial war. In there he developed inspiration based in his experiences while serving in the Portuguese colonial war.


He made his first exhibition in 1970 in Nampula, Mozambique. This exhibition showed sculptures based on his experience on the Portuguese colonial war. This experience resulted in inspiration that influenced his work for many years.

His sculptures are in Mozambique, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), South Africa, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Brazil, United Kingdom and United States.

He created Ian Smith´s bust (Prime-Minister) in Rhodesia, and Mário Soares Bust (Portuguese President) in Portugal. His busts include other politicians like Francisco Sá Carneiro, Comendador Marcelino Nunes Corrêa and his family.


He worked with several city councils in Portugal creating busts and statues of politicians and other public figures throughout the country, especially in the center and north of Portugal.

Among other cities, his busts and statues in Portugal are in Aveiro, Águeda, Fermentelos, Albergaria, Oiã, Ilhavo and Pedrógão Grande where he made the Vasco da Gama statue.
